The Nell Mitchell Wellness Fair, promoting health and wellness activities for the community, will be from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, in the Fieldhouse of the Gymnasium. The event is free and open to the public.
The fair features wellness activities, information booths and screenings. People are encouraged to dress casually so they can participate in activities.
A Live Healthy JCCC employee participant reward booth will be available, along with these booths:
• Blood pressure checks and vision screens, JCCC nursing students
• Chair massages, massage therapist Susan Cunningham
• Proactive breast cancer 101, hands-on learning and education, breast cancer advocate Candy Warinner
• Stress and mental health education, Johnson County Mental Health Department
• Back injury prevention, spinal screening, Fulk Chiropractic
• Tick-borne diseases, Lyme Association of Greater Kansas City, tick removal kits for $3
• Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue disease information and resources, Fibromyalgia Coalition International
• American Heart Association
• AIDS/ STDs/ tobacco education
• Drug and alcohol abuse
• Nutrition education
• JCCC Lifetime Fitness Center
• American Cancer Society Information
Sessions with specific times are:
• Sleep activity assessments, JCCC polysomnography/sleep technology program, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
• Hands-on help for choking victims (adult, infant, child), noon-12:50 p.m.
• Keeping your core body fit, 12:15-12:45 p.m., watch or participate
A wellness basket will be awarded at 2 p.m. (need not be present to win).
The wellness fair is an annual event made possible through the Nell Mitchell estate since March 1999. Mitchell, an Overland Park resident and physical education instructor at Paseo High School, left $1 million from her estate to the JCCC Foundation to be used for physical education scholarships and Nell Mitchell speakers and fair for continuing education.
