MBH - my brain hurts 021

How could I not author any post in this series for so long? I don’t know, sometimes feel like a stranger in my own life. I was in eighth grade when The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air had an episode about this event some two decades ago.
“Where were you 20 years ago this week? For those of us who were in Los Angeles, we might remember tense times as the jury began deliberations in the controversial Rodney King beating trial. On April 29, 1992, shortly after the verdict was read, the city erupted in ...”
“We’ll be prepared... for what?”

Summary of Improv Goals 020

Following the shows at the Roving Imp this Saturday, I went to the home of Denton, and he and I analyzed the a scene from the Nerds show from Saturday, April 14; the audience had given the suggestion, “Doomsday preppers,” and our interpretation of doomsday had zombies who were not stereotypical zombies, but were looking for inclusion back in society.

Again, I will share the following scene. John and Kitty set two boxes beside each other and played as if they were in a car at a drive-in, located in the underground complex.
Frank came up to the car as a zombie and asked in a low, slow voice,  “Are you ready to order?”
John said, “We haven’t pushed the button yet.”
“Okay, I’ll come back.”
John and Kitty had some more dialog.
I approached the other side,  “Are you ready to order?”
Kitty replied, “We haven’t pushed the button yet.”
“Okay, I’ll come back.”
In the scene between Frank and I,
we reprise those zombie characters,
and I went, “Oh, you’re late again.”

OK OK OK, as I demonstrated, the quality of my listening sure varies. Because today is Sunday, I am presently at the home of Denton to help him with his math. I feel kind of lazy, so I  just want to punt this post out the door. Rather than share the analysis of the scene, line by line, I will fast forward to the logical conclusion of the conversation.
In order to avoid conflict, the goal of your character is have a relationship with your other player, where you care about what they think about you, to get them to love you.
I have a history with Denton in improv; I was in a troupe that he directed from fall 2001 to spring 2004, and he was also a judge in the second season of The Next Big Improv Show.

You’re killing me, Smalls

What may seem like a lifetime ago, my friend Denton worked for Frontier Airlines, where on the ramp they repeated a line from The Sandlot, “You’re killing me, Smalls.”image

One of my great aunts recently passed away, and meant a lot to my mother, who has driven to Wyoming with my father for the funeral, leaving my two younger sisters and I at home. In truth, I have visited the home of Denton for at least three times for at least three hours in as many days, which is not that unusual.

As usual, my sister Kim rode with me to the College the last two days, and we returned to our separate corners of the house once we were home this afternoon. Friday night, she goes to hang with the friends of my sister Pamela, and Pamela, at the Arby’s in Mission. Thursday night, when I awoke from a nap of three hours, Pamela and Kim had gone somewhere, but both sisters were home in the morning.

Some problem now exists with my amended return. I must go to H&R Block on Monday. I have plans for that other two thousand dollars, you know.

Summary of Improv Goals 019

At the 75th Street Brewery, KC drinker says, “Bar food [is] taken to the next level,” and Rachel in the bar area is always a truly excellent server. After my wonderful dinner, I was en route to the Roving Imp Training Center. Tuesday around 6:42 p.m., the sign at Papa Bob’s BBQ quantified the unseasonably warm weather: 86 degrees Fahrenheit. I weigh less than 300 pounds, but being diabetic makes the heat worse, because I am permitted no Gatorade. Last night, I got too hot, and had to leave, yet mentally noted some things from class.

Later at the home of Denton, Pepperdance in front of Rarity
Later at the home of Denton, Pepperdance loves to race
and takes the lead from Rarity.

Creative director in both title and nuisance, John set us to a game of Emotion-Location Circle, “Love in a Chinese Restaurant,” which sounds like a song by Aerosmith; I later realized that. After everyone gave an opening line, John instructed us to use those lines to start some scenes; the scene that I initiated with David follows.
As he had in the previous scene, David sat on a box.
I remained standing, and repeated my earlier line, “That was the best kung pao chicken that I have ever had.”
Although I cannot exactly remember how David responded, he responded in a Chinese accent, then we both uttered two more lines of dialog.
John paused us, “David, your accent is great, but what is your emotion, what your character is feeling?” “Grateful,” replied David.
John continued, “You can have a Chinese accent and be grateful,” which he followed with impassioned thanks covering his heart with both hands.
We resumed, and David delivered a long and impassioned speech, saying “rub” instead of love, and everyone lost it.
The last scene in this round was between Dustin and John. Dustin is really, really new to improv, so he struggles to think of responses.
John opened this scene, calling Dustin, “Sumi.”
As an actor, Dustin said nothing for while and fidgeted, moving his arm across his hair.
In the audience, I began to laugh, because Dustin was actually playing a brilliant character, although he did not immediately appreciate this fact.
As an actor in desperation, Dustin apologized, “I forgot my brain today.”
The scene continued for a few more lines, and John painted Sumi as a girl who was not all there, but for whom his character had great love and affection.
As director, John challenged Dustin, “Go ahead, say anything, a line that you think will throw me off.”
In the previously described emotion, John responded.
Before we began to run the long form called a la Ronde, John illuminated that every player at times will not have any idea what to say:
“I was on stage with that feeling a few times this weekend, but the second player on stage is there to help you, support you. So, if you ever see me with this look...”
When I left 75th Street, I should have insisted on a cup of iced tea to go, yet I still learned a few things last night, despite my having to leave early.

Summary of Improv Goals 018

My ensemble Nerds had a great show Saturday. The audience gave the suggestion, “Doomsday preppers.” For the opening, David, Kitty, and I took seats the stage to informally speak; we are the three who knew something about the topic.
Link Building - Creating Encyclopedic Content
“Creating encyclopedic or reference quality content for link building is an easy to implement strategy many people neglect from their plan.”
I heard Disney in that last post?
20 Posters for Disney Classics
“First, thanks for all the interest in our recent TV shows posters and all the nice reactions. In the future we plan to expand this project but today it’s a different set of posters. Even though...”
OK OK OK, I demonstrated those in reverse order, and I have yet to explain why I went on stage. I follow the American Preppers Network blog, but most of my understanding of preparedness comes from my friend Denton, who certainly enjoys How Everything Goes to Hell During a Zombie Apocalypse via The Oatmeal.

I cannot remember what I said during the opening, but Kitty talked about how her two coworkers, who sit on either side of her, spend entire paychecks on gear to prepare for the massive solar flare expected to occur this year. David mentioned all the fallout shelters built in the Sixties, and I corrected him, saying that that was actually in the Fifties.

Our interpretation of doomsday had zombies, but they did not behave stereotypically; the first time any character expected a zombie to so do, I came on stage as an attorney for the Zombie Anti-defamation League. David played a character who had built a underground complex, and we learned in subsequent scenes that every thing therein was stereotypical of Americana of the Fifties: cars with fins, drive-ins, and the only music on the radio.

John played someone who had taken refuge in the complex, and David said, “We have had a zombie includgion,” which we later discovered was an incursion of zombies who were looking for inclusion back in society.

I really, really want to briefly tell another story about the time before improv class on Tuesday; I was speculative yesterday about whether or not to take advantage of a few freebies through Tax Day, yet I accept my societal role as a consumerist whore, and want nothing more than to put out, especially after I found more deals in this article.
Tax Day Freebies 2012: Where To Get Free Stuff
“Now that most of us have filed our tax returns to Uncle Sam, it's finally time to celebrate the end of tax season. The following business are providing discounted food offers to give American taxpayers a little extra relief.”
image
My swag from Arby’s, Boston Market, Bruegger’s, and Panda Express.

The quality of my listening sure varies, I locked out my father yesterday because I did not hear; he had just stepped outside to roll up the hose. Despite that I again have congestion behind my left eardrum, last night in class, I think that I actually listened well, I was not tired, but became hot and thirsty.

Tuesday in class, we practiced various vocal techniques to develop a character: speaking fast, speaking slow, speaking high, speaking low, speaking with an accent, and speaking in the voice of a celebrity. The most memorable parts were my scenes with David. He did the most ludicrous version of Kermit the Frog, and I could not help laughing, but with some coaching from John, my character said that he could not take the character of David seriously, thus saving the scene.

We ran a long form called a la Ronde, where two people do a scene, the next person edits, one person stays on stage, and we progress through a circle. After the first iteration, we recognized our lack of defined relationships. I was now in my second scene with David.
I began, “Ted, I’m going to bring you before the medical board.”
“Nancy, I...”
He caught me off guard, and I know that I moved closer to him during the scene, yet I cannot remember any more dialog because I descended into laughter again as he carried on. We concluded with Party Quirks, where we played a character assigned by the audience as someone guessed and we gave clues.

I don’t know, do you 019

How could I not author any post in this series for so long? I don’t know, sometimes feel like a stranger in my own life. I yesterday said that I might today have no visit to the 75th Street Brewery in order to take advantage of a few freebies to get through Tax Day; I likely will not. While my mother was willing to drive my sister out to the College this morning, I awoke to my alarm, without enough time to go to Bruegger’s before work, and I am still waiting on my tax refund, so I really can not spare money, which is better used for Hot Pockets, and we had left over some pizza in the refrigerator.
Slacktivism: A Gateway, and Only a Gateway, to Changing Lives
“Tweeting about good causes doesn’t hurt -- and for young people ‘slacktivism’ can be a good gateway toward the stirrings of a broader social consciousness. But true engagement begins by lifting your sights from your mobile device out to the world at large, and personally embracing someone in need.”
Although I participated in the Dining Out For Life International event last year, I am unsure if I can afford to this year. Even though this blog, and computers from this era, will be unreadable to archeologists in two hundred years, I want to be sure that the record is correct. I don’t know, do you?

“Culture PopSadly, Taco Tuesday will be Tax Tuesday this week. You will cut a check on Tax Day that is your burden to bear. But I can help you do it on a full stomach.”
OK OK OK, to do these tomorrow, I might have no visit to the 75th Street Brewery, because my Tuesdays are typically very busy.

Four in the Afternoon

After a brief visit Friday to the home of Denton, I went to Verizon Wireless.

Around four in the afternoon, they had a display to encourage the download of IndyCar Series mobile app, which will not excite me any more about the Series.

Rarity wears false Eyelashes

Allow me to first say that this has been a draft since last Sunday, and a story has broken that I will speak about later in this piece, but I would like to begin positively. Sheryl Sandberg Leaves Work at 5:30 Every Day — And You Should Too
“Ending one’s workday before 8:00 p.m. became a source of shame and sign of laziness -- or at least that’s what many of us have tricked ourselves into believing.”
Although the following is from Gossip Genie, please note that the title of this post comes from “MMMystery on the Friendship Express”.
Sheryl Sandberg: ‘There’s No Such Thing As Work-Life Balance’
“Sheryl Sandberg is the chief operating officer of Facebook, a mother of two, and an outspoken advocate for women leaders. Here’s one more reason she rocks: she doesn’t pretend it’s easy.”
The following currently graces my screen at work:

6 Habits of True Strategic Thinkers
“You’re the boss, but you still spend too much time on the day-to-day. Here’s how to become the strategic leader your company needs.”
A rivalry between high schools is a far more classy thing than a hollaback girl. Whether the title accurately describes Stefani, she was the vocalist. Also, for your enrichment, this scene from Family Guy features said song.
