Nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System
is at 1 p.m. today

“The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Communications Commission will conduct the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) at 1 p.m. today.

While the EAS is used often by state and local governments, this will be the first time the system has ever been tested nationally. Although the nationwide EAS test may resemble the periodic monthly EAS tests that the public is familiar with, there will be some differences in what seen or heard, which is one reason for conducting a nationwide EAS test.

The test will be approximately 30 seconds long and will look and sound very similar to the frequent local tests of the EAS,

An audio message will interrupt television and radio programming indicating “This is only a test” though text may not indicate this same message on the screen on every television channel,

The test will be transmitted via television and radio stations nationwide – it will not include NOAA weather radios, mobile devices, or outdoor warning sirens.”
