Kevin Willmott, associate professor of film and media studies at the University of Kansas, will share his life and work at two separate events at Johnson County Community College.

His first presentation, sponsored by the Kansas Studies Institute, is ‘Race, History and Being a Kansas Filmmaker’ at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26, in Hudson Auditorium. A reception in the atrium is at 6:30, and the public is invited to attend.

Willmott grew up in Junction City, Kan., and he wrote, produced and co-directed ‘Ninth Street,’ a film that examined ‘Junk City’s’ seedy downtown during the Vietnam War era. ‘Ninth Street’ starred well-known actors Martin Sheen and Isaac Hayes, but that wasn’t Wilmott’s first brush with Hollywood.

As a screenwriter, Willmott co-wrote screenplays bought by Hollywood’s Chris Columbus and Oliver Stone and by executives at CBS and NBC. His own film, ‘CSA: Confederate States of America,’ answered the question of what the United States would have been like had the South won the Civil War.

In his second appearance, he’ll show his film ‘From Separate to Equal: The Creation of Truman Medical Center’ at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, also in Hudson Auditorium. The public is encouraged to attend this event as well.

The movie will serve as a cinematic introduction to the book chosen as JCCC’s Common Read for 2012-13: ‘The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks’ by Rebecca Skloot.

Henrietta Lacks, a black woman from Virginia, died of cervical cancer in 1951, and her cells – taken without her knowledge or the consent of her family – were used in medical research. The book details the little-known Lacks and shares the effects of this medical research on Lacks’ family.

Both the film and the book examine how the health care establishment treated the black population of the U.S. in the 20th century.”

Quivira Road construction update: Left turns limited periodically
from south Quivira Road entrance this week

“Work will commence on the inside lane of northbound Quivira Road at 8:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20, starting at 119th Street and working north to College Boulevard.

When the construction reaches the JCCC south Quivira Road entrance, at approximately noon or 1 p.m., the median will be closed for about an hour and drivers will not be able to make a left turn to enter or leave the campus. However, drivers will be able to make a right turn into or out of campus during that time.

Similar closures are expected to take place periodically throughout the week.

JCCC students, employees and visitors are encouraged to use the College Boulevard entrances to enter and leave campus during this time.

To alleviate congestion, drivers who ordinarily would have made a left hand turn to exit campus from the Quivira Road exit are asked to exit the campus based on where they parked. This campus map shows the exits which should be used.
  • Drivers who park on the east side of campus, including those who use the east exit of the Parking Garage at Galileo’s Garden, are urged to use the east College Boulevard exit at Oakmont.
  • Drivers who park on the west side of campus, including those who use the south exit of the Parking Garage at Galileo’s Garden, are urged to use the west College Boulevard exit at Westgate.
Drivers coming to campus from the south are encouraged to use the following route: take 119th Street to Pflumm Road; turn right and take Pflumm Road north to College Boulevard; turn right and take College Boulevard east to one of the JCCC College Boulevard entrances.”

As a reader, you might be asking why I have bothered to say all of this. Well, the fictious advertisements from sponsors in You Don’t Know Jack greatly inspired me when we last rehearsed ‘A Word from Our Sponsors’ at the home of John. Ahead is our strongest set from rehearsal, with a little more exposition.

He also authored an article entitled ‘Reviewing & Reexamining OSHA’s Multi-Employer Citation Policy,’ in the August 2012 edition of Professional Safety: Journal of the American Society of Safety Engineers. The society represents approximately 35,000 safety and health professionals worldwide.”
OK OK OK, the game that we rehearsed was an opening where we each find a seat on a chair, informally discuss a topic as if we were in a living room, and we in essence play ourselves. John gave us the suggestion ‘wildfire,’ which was something that David and I saw while traveling to Lawrence, although that fire was technically a controlled burn.

I possessed other knowledge, so I spoke with Joel about Wild Fire; an image of this original character (OC) of Sibsy (i.e., Senior Storyboard Editor of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic) is shown above. Wild Fire appeared in the background and had a line in the final episode of the second season. Unfortunately for Joel, I tripped over a few syllables, so I just started to talk like the following meme.

When workshops were on Tuesday, Frank had no problem attending, but they were moved to Monday, and Frank had to wait a month before the hours at his job could accomodate that change. John revised our scheduled rehearsals to now be on Sunday, so history repeats itself. To be fair, John did send out a survey, to which Frank may not have replied. The situation was not that I did not want to have more in mind to post, but afternoon naps make fools of us. Yesterday, I also too tired in the morning. Tonight, the following aired:
“Tune-in to the world premiere special, ‘The Timey-Wimey of Doctor Who,’ on Saturday, August 18 at 9/8c on BBC America.”
OK OK OK, I did not watch the entire program,
but the preceding was nonetheless interesting.
Is my blog in decline?

“A brain in near-perfect condition is found in a body-less skull of a person who was decapitated over 2,600 years ago in England.”
We have our next rehearsal at the home of John on Sunday, and our sets at the Ecumenical Christian Ministries building in Lawrence on Friday night were great. With no shows this evening, nor money to attend them, I am tonight visiting the home of Denton, who has been rather busy this last week, and we are watching Super 8.

My finances were generally as much of an experiment as this blog; I am  to have to be rather careful the next two weeks. Although I gained some money from my participation in a listening study, I paid the remaining half of my bill with my cable provider, and am thus down one hundred dollars more than usual.

Celebratory note 033

JCCC named by Chronicle of Higher Education as great college to work for Oh my God, Colgate is so damn cute when she's smiling

“Johnson County Community College is again one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to a survey conducted by The Chronicle of Higher Education.

JCCC was recognized as such in four categories: professional/career development programs; facilities, workspaces and security; job satisfaction; and work/life balance. The college was also recognized as a great college to work for in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

The results, released Monday in The Chronicle’s fifth annual report on the academic workplace, are based on a survey of more than 46,000 employees at 294 colleges and universities.

In all, only 103 of the 294 institutions received ‘Great College to Work For’ recognition for specific best practices and policies. Results are reported for small, medium and large institutions, with JCCC included among the large institutions with 10,000 or more students.

‘Although honors are appreciated, our real goal is to create a campus climate conducive to learning and student success,’ said Terry Calaway, JCCC president. ‘The best way to do that is to create a community that values the contributions our employees make toward helping students learn.’

‘We’re very proud that JCCC has been recognized as a great college to work for,’ said Melody Rayl, chair of the JCCC board of trustees. ‘When our faculty and staff view the college as a great place to work, that helps our students see JCCC as a great place to learn.’

The survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution and a survey administered to faculty, administrators and professional support staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was employee feedback.

To administer the survey and analyze the results, the Chronicle worked with Modern Think LLC, a strategic human capital consulting firm that has conducted numerous ‘Best Places to Work’ programs nationwide.

Additional information about the Great Colleges to Work For program may be found at Great Colleges to Work For 2011 - The Chronicle of Higher Education.”

Quivira Road construction update:
Work on inside lane of northbound Quivira under way

“Work is under way on the inside lane of northbound Quivira Road from 119th Street to College Boulevard. Workers are starting at 119th Street and working north on this phase of the project.

Expect delays if you’re making a left-hand turn onto Quivira Road from the college’s south Quivira Road entrance.

In addition, late in the week, there may be periodic closures of the south Quivira Road entrance between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. as construction work reaches that stretch of the roadway.

JCCC students, employees and visitors are encouraged to use the College Boulevard entrances and exits to campus while the construction continues on Quivira Road.”

Stale zaniness 027

My specualtions in Egocentric Universe: MBH - my brain hurts 024 were, needless to say, unfounded as our carpooling to the home of John in Lawrence was yesterday the highlight of my day. Well, the workshop was really great, too.

Anyway, for a time I considered changing the theme or layout of this blog; at their top many of these themes rotate images, which was a problem because most of my posts contained no images. I found an image to anchor “Weird Al” and Ponies.

Pipsqueak really, truly is unintentional Magic

The desire to fulfill personal ambitions may cause much frustration in my life,
as often successful operation of the Facebook mobile app will be thwarted,
probably because of my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE smartphone.

I don’t really get Pipsqueak (Friendship is Magic), which one would reason to be dedicated to Pipsqueak or Pip, “a young Earth pony from Trottingham who dressed up as a pirate for Nightmare Night,” yet the page posts antithetically to that character, and I can not look away.
In truth, I had to restart my Samsung Mobile twice before I could successfully use Facebook on Verizon Wireless 4G LTE, and nearly thirty minutes elapsed.
