Debate team wins WSU championship
”The Johnson County Community College debate team won the tournament championship Jan. 26-27 at Wichita State University.The team of Candace Villanueva and Brenden Brower-Freeman defeated Kansas City Kansas Community College in the final round on a 3-0 decision. Villanueva and Brower-Freeman advanced to the elimination rounds after accumulating a 4-2 preliminary round record.In the preliminary rounds they had victories over schools from Concordia College, Lindenwood University, and Kansas City Kansas Community College. In the first elimination round they defeated a team from Emporia State University on a 2-1 decision. In the semifinals they defeated another team from Kansas City Kansas Community College on a 3-0 decision.The team’s next tournament will be Feb. 22 at Central Oklahoma University.”
Academic Excellence Challenge team selected for championship
”After winning the National Academic Quiz Tournaments Sectional Qualifier on Jan. 26, the JCCC Academic Excellence Challenge team received an invitation to compete at the NAQT Community College Championship Tournament March 1 and 2 in St. Louis, Mo.This marks the second year that the team has qualified for the competition. Currently, the JCCC Academic Excellence Challenge team is ranked 22nd in the nation.Competing in the championship competition will be team captain Annie Lynn and members Mathew Kelley, Frida Lara, Jared Mullis, Kurt Partridge and Rhiannon Pearson. The team is coached by Mindy Kinnaman.”
