Stale zaniness 012

A post about stale zaniness is almost obligatorily necessary at the end of a month, and in wishing you, “Happy National Coffee Day,” I do believe that I might have shared more of such than in the last four months combined. I have even repaired a few older posts with the inclusion of the following:

Such is also the case with hiatus of Roving Imp shows on Wednesdays at the Great Mall of the Great Plains; I can now be at home for the new episodes at 9:00 p.m. instead of staying up until 11:00 p.m.:

News of the day 001

I work and attend class at Johnson County Community College, and I would like to shared related news:

JCCC is again ranked among
top digital community colleges

“Johnson County Community College is again listed among the top-rated community colleges for digital technology by the Center for Digital Education and Converge Magazine. JCCC was also top-ranked in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

The annual Digital Community Colleges Survey documents advances made by community colleges in using information technology and recognizes which colleges, as a result, provide a high level of service to their faculty, students and communities.

The survey looked at technology integration into college curriculum and campus life, documenting use of online admissions processes, distance education, technology training for students and faculty, campus security alerts, and use of Web 2.0 social and collaborative capabilities as well as online tutoring and advisory services. Use of mobile devices was also a key indicator of success.

‘It’s a great honor to be recognized by experts as one of the best in the country.’ said Terry Calaway, president, JCCC. ‘Our faculty, staff and administrators find innovative ways to use technology in and out of the classroom to improve teaching, learning and student support.’

JCCC was listed among the top colleges in the large college category (10,000 students or more).

1st: Kingsborough Community College, Brooklyn, N.Y.

2nd: Lone Star College, The Woodlands, Texas

3rd: Montgomery County Community College, Tacoma Park, Md.

3rd: Northern Virginia Community College, Alexandria, Va.

4th: Catawba Valley Community College, Hickory, N.C.

5th: Scottsdale Community College, Scottsdale, Ariz.

6th: Howard Community College, Columbia, Md.

7th: Johnson County Community College

7th: Tidewater Community College, Norfolk, Va.

8th: Jefferson State Community College, Birmingham, Ala.

9th: Moraine Valley Community College, Palos Hills, Ill.

9th: Salt Lake Community College, Salt Lake City, Utah

10th: Delaware Technical and Community College, Wilmington, Del.

10th: LaGuardia Community College, Long Island City, N.Y.

‘As community college enrollments continue to increase, school leaders are incorporating new technologies to enhance student services and improve course curriculum,’ said Cathilea Robinett, executive vice president of the Center for Digital Education. ‘Expanded distance learning offerings, use of mobile devices, and greater collaboration – among other efforts – demonstrate these winners’ drive to provide students with a high-quality education at a lower cost.’

Winners will be recognized at an awards reception during the League for Innovation in the Community College’s STEMtech conference on Oct. 3 in Indianapolis, IN.

Information about colleges listed in the mid-sized and small colleges categories can be found here.”

Orange barrel alert:
Major highway shutdown coming

“If you travel I-435 near Quivira, take heed. Major weekend closing events are coming that will significantly alter traffic patterns.

Beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, all eastbound lanes of I-435 from U.S. 69 to I-35 will be closed until 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 3. The entrance ramp from Quivira Road to eastbound I-435 will be closed at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30, to permit staging of construction equipment.

Beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, all westbound lanes of I-435 will be closed from U.S. 69 to I-35 and will reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 10. The entrance ramp from Quivira Road to westbound I-435 will be closed at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 7, to permit staging of construction equipment.

Construction crews are installing two underground concrete storm water drainage systems, which require tearing up I-435 and digging across the roadway. The highway lanes will be rebuilt in time for reopening the following Monday morning.

The highway closings are dependent upon weather.

Alternate routes include:

  • For eastbound I-435, detour via northbound I-35 to 87th Street to southbound U.S. 69 to eastbound I-435.

  • For westbound I-435, detour via northbound U.S. 69 to 87th Street, to southbound I-35 to westbound I-435; or southbound U.S. 69 to 119th Street, west to I-35, then north.

The work is part of a $102 million project to add auxiliary lanes to I-435 between U.S. 69 and Quivira Road. The improvements will help alleviate congestion at I-435 and U.S. 69 interchange.

The Kansas Department of Transportation is administering the project. Overland Park contributed $8 million toward construction costs.”

Chocolate Frosted Doughnut w/ Sprinkles

Sometime this week, my type-II diabetes will have been managed for six months. Who knows how long I may have been diabetic, but I finally had the blood test that my doctor wanted for me to get. Interpreting the results, a different doctor said, “Yep, you’re diabetic.”

I received Dr Pepper for Christmas last year

A good and trusted friend since 1993, Denton has a diabetic father, and I have looked to him as a source of advice. When I asked if I could have a sports drink, he said, “You can only drink four things: coffee, milk, tea, and water.”

I no longer drink soda, or diet soda. I rarely eat desserts. I hardly even miss them. Dunkin Donuts, who thankfully also has plain cake doughnuts, had an image of a chocolate frosted doughnut with sprinkles today, which inspired this post.

My mother has type-I diabetes and my father has type-II, so I have a family history of diabetes, and cause to be concerned about my future. We all had angel food cake and strawberries for my birthday this year.

At its height, my weight was 313 pounds; it now between 285 and 290 pounds. My friend David has been an inspiration; he has lost 60 pounds this year by walking regularly and lifting some weights.

In my confusion about salads and their being a way to save on carbohydrates, Denton replied, “Anything that’s not meat is a carb.”

Ever so slowly, my diet, my body and my image of myself will likely change and become more positive. At least, I am trying.

Honoring the Anniversary of September 11

On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, I was running late for class. Just as I was entering I-35, I heard about the first plane striking the World Trade Center on Z95.7 FM. I said nothing in my first class. I cried inside the entire time. We had our break between lecture and laboratory. After lab, I heard that the Pentagon had also been attacked and both towers were gone. Later I went to do some off-campus deliveries. With rumors about the closure of the U.S. borders, everyone was making a run to the fuel stations. My co-worker and I stopped at Fuddruckers on Metcalf. Back on campus, I saw the collapse of World Trade Center Seven on the air. I worked later until that night to shut down the CNN broadcast in one of the theaters on campus.

A second out of phase 006

For someone such as I, who watched anime on Adult Swim until 1:30 a.m., awoke at 8:30 a.m. to watch My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and then awoke again at noon for day, Sunday was so busy thereafter that I did not write any post as I had planned to do. Denton had asked me on Friday to help him with his college mathematics course on Sunday, and I am not complaining, but I did not realize that that afternoon I would be watching Inception on Denton’s mobile phone while he and our friend Sam worked on a Honda motorcycle, which belonged to our other friend Jimmy, while Jimmy was in turn working on a car for someone else.

For someone who is not complaining, I could indeed sound like the opposite. The serious post that I meant to write Sunday will be written tomorrow, so the absence of any post on Sunday, September 11, 2011 can be appropriately perceived as a moment of silence. As in improv, I may reverse-justify my actions.

What is it with you and Ponies?

A decade has passed since a certain event, to which a post should probably be dedicated tomorrow, so I will speak about something less serious today. Whom I see at least once a week, my best friend from high school, Denton, lives three miles from me. On one of my recent visits to his house, he asked, and I am paraphrasing, “What is it with you and Ponies?”

I replied that I liked the animation, and I was doing things just to be different.

I also like the on-line community. This is also not the first time my preference for an animated series has confused my family. Tara Strong, the voice of Twilight Sparkle, has also played Bubbles in The Powerpuff Girls and Timmy in the Fairly Odd Parents, which confused my family.

Day late, ... short 001

The image above compares Mitt Romney and Rick Perry to a scene from Futurama:
“Fry and Leela are watching a debate. The candidates are clones, they use the same tone of voice and body movements for each other’s short speech.”
Commas splice nicely. The presidential address yesterday evening was likely pointless.
News from The Associated Press
“WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama’s promise Thursday that everything in his jobs plan will be paid for rests on highly iffy propositions.”
Instead, I was happily watching the summer finale of Burn Notice on USA Network.

Putting your child in your TV advertising does not cause me to be more inclined to buy from you.
Do These Crazy Camaro Commercials Make You Want To Buy?
“The fanatics at Camaro5 found these ‘advertising tributes’ and shared them with the world. Many Camaro purists have called the new body style a ‘chick car,’ but these commercials are trying valiantly to dispel those misconceptions.”
This band is best known for their squandering of hotties. Hundreds of them. So c’mon, free backstage passes!

“Just like in Groundhog Day when Bill Murray wakes up to the same day each and every morning, it appears Americans will feel a frustrating sense of déjà vu listening to President Obama’s jobs speech on Sept. 8. According to Bloomberg, Obama’s not-so-new plan ‘follows the contours of his $830 billion...’”

“We’ve all got the ‘Someday, maybe’ lists. Postscript to Experiment 014

imageOnce again, “Equestria Girls” returned as my ring-tone. I did not silence my mobile phone, and someone called me twice by mistake, to the surprise of the class at the Roving Imp. I’m still not Jim. My Chevy Cavalier posted 25.353 miles per gallon or 9.244 liters per 100 kilometers at QuikTrip.

I have yet to take the same route to the Great Mall of the Great Plains to see the Roving Imp shows there. Of course, even if I did take the same route, it would be a different route, due to Chaos Theory, and microscopic imperfections in the road surface. Microscopic, mind you.
