“Johnson County Community College announces changes to its Brown & Gold Club regarding programming and classes.

JCCC’s Brown & Gold Club merges
with Coming of Age/Shepherd’s Center Central

JCCC’s Brown & Gold Club is merging with Coming of Age/Shepherd’s Center Central (SCC), which serves Johnson County and the Kansas City metropolitan area.

JCCC’s Brown & Gold Club, first created in the late 1980s, was intended for Johnson County residents who were age 55 and older. For their $10 dues, members could take advantage of educational and cultural benefits offered at JCCC, discounted noncredit classes, and discounted tickets to cultural events as well as educational travel and entertainment provided exclusively to the organization. In addition, members were offered free credit classes (the day before the semester started, members could enroll at no cost in credit classes that still had available seats).

‘In times of scarce resources, the college was pleased to find a strategic partner who could grow and enhance the club in collaboration with JCCC,’ said Dennis Day, vice president of student success and engagement. ‘Therefore, effective immediately, the Brown & Gold Club will merge with Coming of Age/Shepherd’s Center Central, which will manage and operate all aspects of the Brown & Gold Club.’

Brown & Gold Club members will continue to receive many benefits and attend programs and activities through that organization.

The transition allows the club to continue and grow. ‘Coming of Age/Shepherd’s Center Central has more expertise with programs for people over age 55, and the membership will be able to become more involved in planning,’ Day said. ‘The new partnership should reach even more seniors, not only in Johnson County but also in the metropolitan area.’

‘We’re pleased to welcome the Brown & Gold Club to the Shepherd’s Center Central family,’ said Pam Seymour, executive director of SCC. ‘We have many new benefits and opportunities to offer them.’

Founded in 1978, Shepherd’s Center Central’s mission is to empower midlife and older adults to lead healthy, engaged and independent lives. In addition to a wide array of benefits, this new partnership will give members of the Brown & Gold Club direct access to the professional staff and programs and services for people 55 and older through SCC.

JCCC extends tuition discount to senior county residents

Beginning with the spring 2014 semester, JCCC will extend a new offer to all senior residents in the county. Any Johnson County resident who is age 60 and older will be able to enroll on a specified day in a credit class at the college by paying only $16.

For many years, members of the college’s Brown & Gold Club were able to enroll in credit classes for free. Approximately 650 people took advantage of the free Brown & Gold enrollment each semester. However, since the club will be merging with Shepherd’s Center Central, this new option will be offered instead. County residents do not need to be a member of a club to take advantage of this offer, although they will need to enroll on the specified day. Usually it’s the day before classes start for the semester; for the spring 2014 semester, that day is Jan. 10.

‘We hope that senior residents’ new access to all credit classes at JCCC for $16 a credit hour will be an incentive to explore and enjoy the educational experience the college has to offer,’ said Day. ‘This new option will allow much more accessibility for those 60 and over to take advantage of the hundreds of classes offered at JCCC.’

Classes at JCCC cost $85 a credit hour; of that amount, $69 covers tuition and $16 goes toward student activity fees. The cost older students will be asked to pay for credit classes equals the amount of the student activity fees.

Although the college had allowed members of the Brown & Gold Club to enroll in classes without cost, the classes were not really free. The college is required by state statute to cover tuition costs and did so in the past by drawing funds from the student activity fees.

‘In the current economic climate, the college can no longer afford to do this,’ Day said. ‘The $16 charge will allow the college to still serve the county’s older adult population, but at a more manageable cost.’”
